Health care in the 21st century requires intensive use of technology in order to acquire and analyze data and manage and disseminate information. No area is more data intensive than the intensive care unit (ICU). More than four million Americans with life-threatening conditions are admitted to ICUs each year. Mortality rates average 10-20%. These patients account for 30% of acute care hospital costs and almost 1% of the gross domestic product of the United States. Yet today’s ICU environment repeatedly fails the public because, despite massive data, providers lack interpretable and actionable information.

The Case Critical Care Bioinformatics Consortium is a tight collaboration between physicians, engineers, computer scientists, experts in informatics and complex biostatistics, and industry focusing on integrated data acquisition, complex processing, and innovative visualization in the ICU so that every provider will have interpretable and actionable information. Established in 2007, our mission is to provide a forum for multidisciplinary collaboration between the computational sciences and critical care medicine. For more information, please visit us as www.case.edu/med/bioinformatics.

At our 4th Annual CWRU Critical Care Bioinformatics Workshop, we have gathered world leaders in the emrging fields of informatics and Health Information Technology to review the current challenges in data acquisition, time synchronization, and analysis in critical care and developments toward the creation of an “Integrated Clinical Environment”. We will discuss the evolution of the information management architecture used in most ICUs today and how clinical decision support tools can best be utilized. We will discuss how complex systems analysis tools can be applied to ICU data along with the major changes that will occur in Health Information Technology over the next decade. Please join us for this innovative and cutting edge workshop. You can either join us live, here in Cleveland, or via the Internet.
