Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound has been referred to the “doctor's stethoscope for the brain.” Since its introduction in 1982, the use of TCD ultrasound has emerged as an indispensible tool to provide structural and physiologic vascular imaging at the bedside. TCD is a noninvasive, safe, and cost-effective way for evaluating cerebrovascular circulation (including hemodynamic information) in real time and can serve as an extension of the neurologic examination. TCD ultrasound will play an increasingly important role in stroke management in the next decade. For our 3rd Annual CWRU TCD Ultrasound Workshop, we have gathered experts in the field of neurosonology to thoroughly review the underlying principles of the technique. We will also review the specific role of TCD monitoring in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, vasospasm, increased ICP, and brain death. We will discuss cerebrovascular reactivity testing, bubble testing, and emboli monitoring. Finally, we will cover how to best document, code, and bill for TCD services. Please join us for this practical and important course in TCD Ultrasound interpretation. |
