"Without music, the most sublime of arts, we would be little more than animals…” - Sir George Martin Music has always been an integral part of the human experience. According to Plato, music “gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” In the healthcare setting, when combined with state-of-the-art medical care, music and the arts create a positive ambience that promotes healing. Over the last twenty years, advances in brain research have led to important discoveries at the intersection of science, health, and music. The Center for Music and Medicine at University Hospital and Case Western Reserve University is dedicated to realizing these discoveries and achieving excellence in education. For more information please visit us at www.uhhospitals.org/musicandmedicine. Our 2nd Annual Cleveland Music and Medicine Symposium is a reflection of mission of promoting healing and improving the lives of our patients, enhancing research and discovery of the neurological foundations of music, and communicating these discoveries to patient, student, and professional audiences. We will be covering the physiology of hearing and the underlying neurological foundations of musical perception, performance, and cognition. We will discuss the musical experience and imagery and the mechanisms of how music affects us emotionally (i.e., why sad songs say so much). Please join us for this fascinating Symposium of the intersection of music and science. |
